Iran Conflict Draws Calls for Ceasefire from Russia and Qatar as Tehran Executes Two Spy Convicts
Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and Qatar’s foreign minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al‑Thani said they want an immediate end to the war in Iran. In a joint statement they urged all parties to halt hostilities and resume diplomatic negotiations based on the June 17 Islamabad Memorandum, calling for a rapid return to dialogue.
On the same day Iran’s judiciary carried out the hanging of two men, Omid Bechand and Pouria Safvat, after convicting them of passing the coordinates of a sensitive military installation to Israel’s Mossad. The executions were presented as punishment for espionage and cooperation with the Israeli intelligence service, amid a broader increase in Iran’s use of the death penalty during the ongoing conflict.
