Iran considers revising nuclear doctrine and NPT withdrawal

Iran is considering a revision of its nuclear doctrine, which may include withdrawing from the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in response to ongoing pressure from the United States and its allies. Abbas Goudarzi, a spokesperson for the Iranian parliament's leadership council, stated that Tehran has the capacity to change its nuclear policy if external pressures persist.

Experts suggest that Iran is more likely to pursue nuclear weapons now than during the 2015 negotiations. Alan Eyre, a former U.S. negotiator, noted that while some hardware may have been destroyed, Iran’s technical knowledge regarding enrichment and centrifuge production has advanced significantly. This technical expertise makes the possibility of Iran returning to previous restrictions less likely.

While Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian recently reaffirmed commitment to the NPT and denied seeking nuclear weapons, other officials have signaled a more aggressive stance. Member of Parliament Fada Hossein Maleki indicated that Tehran would respond in kind to any potential U.S. nuclear actions. These developments occur amid heightened regional tensions and reported maritime and military confrontations between Iranian and U.S. forces.
