Iran considers urgent withdrawal from Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

The Iranian Parliament is considering a bill to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The proposal is being treated with “extreme urgency,” requiring deputies to debate the matter on the same day it is presented.

Ali Nikzad, the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, stated that the country will study the international implications of such a move. Experts suggest the potential withdrawal may serve as a diplomatic strategy to increase pressure on international actors in the absence of direct negotiations.

Russia has expressed concern regarding the potential move, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov stating that Moscow would not want Iran to withdraw from the treaty. While the legislative move signals heightened tension, analysts note that exiting the treaty alone does not technically facilitate the immediate creation of nuclear weapons, as such progress requires long-term technical work.
