Iran condemns new US economic sanctions as violation of sovereignty

Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Ismail Baghaei, has condemned new US economic sanctions against Iran, characterizing them as an attempt to impose extraterritorial sovereignty over all independent UN member states.

Baghaei stated that these secondary sanctions lack a basis in international law and violate the principle of sovereign equality established in Article 2(1) of the UN Charter. He further argued that economic intimidation designed to force a state to change its legitimate policy options constitutes an international crime. He warned that such measures, especially when combined with maritime blockades, could lead to a catastrophic return to full-scale colonialism.

In a related development, US President Donald Trump has warned of economic consequences for any nation providing a lifeline to Iran. Reports indicate that while oil transit through the Strait of Hormuz has seen significant fluctuations, the US military has assisted in transporting an average of eight million barrels of oil per day through the strait over a seven-day period.
