Iran criticizes UN Secretary-General over mission definition

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei has criticized the United Nations Secretary-General for what he describes as a dangerous reduction of the organization's fundamental purpose. Baghaei argued that defining the UN's success solely by its ability to ‘prevent war between superpowers’ is a misleading interpretation of the UN Charter.

Baghaei stated that such a narrow view undermines Article 2(4) of the Charter and renders the majority of UN member states irrelevant. He warned that this perspective could justify nearly any conflict and effectively ‘whitewash’ crimes committed by so-called superpowers against other nations. He cited historical conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Congo, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Sudan, and Gaza as examples of atrocities that would be incorrectly viewed as successes under this limited criteria.
