Indonesia delegation travels to Iran for Ayatollah Khamenei's funeral
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, died on 28 February 2026 after a U.S.–Israeli strike on Tehran. His state funeral was delayed until early July because of security concerns amid the Iran‑Israel conflict, and was held in Mashhad after a massive mourning procession in Tehran that drew millions.
Indonesia sent a high‑level delegation to attend the funeral. Foreign Minister Sugiono and People's Consultative Assembly Speaker Ahmad Muzani confirmed the group would depart Jakarta on the night of 9 July 2026, fly directly to Mashhad and arrive on the morning of 10 July. The delegation, which also includes several Indonesian ulama, will stay for one day, attend the burial ceremony, and hold meetings with Iran's foreign minister and parliament speaker before returning to Jakarta.
Indonesian President‑linked party leader Megawati Sukarnoputri issued condolences that were broadcast on Iranian television. The Iranian embassy in Jakarta explained the funeral delay was necessary for the safety of participants. A Jakarta‑based think‑tank, GREAT Institute, urged President Prabowo Subianto to attend the funeral as a gesture to strengthen Indonesia‑Iran ties.
