United States expels two Iranian diplomats from New York

The United States has expelled two members of Iran’s delegation to the United Nations following their failure to comply with a State Department order to leave the country after the UN General Assembly concluded.

U.S. officials stated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is serious about enforcing departure orders, noting that the two diplomats remained in New York long after they were instructed to depart. One diplomat left on Friday night, while the second departed on Saturday morning.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has disputed the U.S. account, calling the reports of expulsion “fake” and “inappropriate.” The Iranian mission to the UN asserted that its members departed according to a pre-planned schedule that had been communicated to the State Department.

The incident occurs amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, including disputes over the Strait of Hormuz. While President Donald Trump has rejected Iranian proposals regarding the strait, he expressed hope that diplomatic talks might resume in the coming days. However, Iranian state news agency IRNA reported that no direct talks are currently scheduled.
