Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has formally called on the United Nations Security Council and member states to reject recent United States sanctions, which he characterized as an ‘economic terrorism campaign.’ In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Araghchi argued that the US measures, specifically under the banner of ‘Operation Economic Expulsion,’ are unlawful attempts to force sovereign nations to sever legitimate trade relations with Iran.

Iran is demanding full compensation from the United States, including restitution and reparations, for both material and moral damages caused by unilateral coercive measures. Araghchi asserted that these sanctions deliberately target the Iranian civilian population by restricting access to essential goods such as food, medicine, energy, and medical equipment.

The diplomatic escalation follows announcements from the US Treasury regarding new sanctions aimed at isolating Iran’s economy. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that entities continuing to trade with Iran would face significant consequences, including potential exclusion from the dollar-based financial system. Iran has urged the international community to refuse the implementation of these secondary sanctions and has requested that the UN assess the humanitarian impact of Washington’s policies.
