Iran Denies Involvement and Blames Israeli False‑Flag Operations after Drone Attack on Gas Tankers in Egypt's Damietta
On July 29–30, 2026, two gas tankers carrying liquefied natural gas caught fire in Egypt's Mediterranean port of Damietta after being struck by drones. The blaze was extinguished without any reported casualties, and Egyptian authorities have not yet assigned blame for the attack.
Iran's foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi warned that Israel may be conducting "false‑flag" operations to destabilise the region and stressed that Iran had no role in the incident, calling Egypt a key friend and partner. The Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Ismail Bekayi reiterated the denial of any Iranian involvement and cautioned against attempts to create discord among regional states.
U.S. President Donald Trump described the episode as "more of the same" and suggested a strong U.S. response, while Yemeni Houthi rebels denied participation. The Damietta Port Authority reported that port operations continued normally.
