Iran designates foreign Persian media as military targets
The Iranian armed forces have designated several Persian-language media outlets operating abroad as part of their “military target bank.” In a statement released on August 26, armed forces spokesman Abolfazl Shekarchi identified BBC Persian, Iran International, and Radio Farda as hostile entities.
Shekarchi accused these outlets of being directly connected to the CIA and Mossad, describing them as “soldiers of Zionism and America” rather than legitimate media organizations. The threat reportedly extends to the personnel working for these networks.
The targeted outlets include Radio Farda, which is operated by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and is based in Prague, Czech Republic. BBC Persian is part of the British Broadcasting Corporation, and Iran International is an independent network with operations in London and Washington.
This escalation follows recent legislative moves in Iran, where the parliament approved a law that could criminalize contact with media deemed hostile by the state, potentially carrying prison sentences for those communicating with such outlets.
