Iran discovers major natural gas field in Fars province

Iran has announced the discovery of a significant natural gas field in the southern Fars province. Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad stated that the Takht-e field contains over 7.5 trillion cubic feet of gas, with approximately 161.41 billion cubic meters (roughly 5.7 trillion cubic feet) being technically recoverable.

The discovered resource is described as “sweet gas,” meaning it has relatively low sulfur content, which is expected to reduce development and operational costs. The find also includes substantial amounts of gas condensates, which officials estimate could be worth tens of billions of dollars.

Despite the scale of the discovery, which is comparable to 15 years of production from a phase of the South Pars field, Iran faces significant hurdles in development. The country must navigate international sanctions that limit access to foreign investment, advanced technology, and specialized equipment. Additionally, the government faces the challenge of securing massive capital; Paknejad noted that Iran requires approximately $19 billion in annual investment over the next four years to meet its gas production goals. Existing infrastructure, such as pipelines and processing facilities, will also require expansion to bring these new reserves to market.
