Iran inflation rate remains high at 87.9% amid surging food costs
Recent data from the Statistical Center of Iran indicates that while the annual inflation rate saw a marginal decrease from 88.6% in June to 87.9% in July, the cost of living remains extremely high for households.
Inflation is most severe in the food and beverage sector, which recorded a year-on-year increase of 128.1%. Specific commodity price surges include a 261.5% increase in oils and fats, 147.1% for dairy and eggs, and 145.2% for meat.
Albert Baghzian, an economics professor at the University of Tehran, noted that the slight reduction in the inflation rate does not signify a drop in prices, but merely a slower rate of increase. He emphasized that the economic situation will only be considered improved when changes are felt in the daily purchasing power of households.
