Iran employs asymmetric tactics to deplete U.S. missile stocks
Iran is increasingly utilizing asymmetric warfare tactics to challenge United States military presence in the Middle East. By deploying waves of drones and advanced missiles capable of sudden course changes, Tehran is successfully forcing the rapid depletion of American air defense resources.
Reports indicate that the Pentagon has consumed over 1,500 Patriot interceptor missiles during the ongoing conflict, leaving fewer than 1,700 in stock. This depletion is driven by Iran's strategy of using low-cost drones and missiles to overwhelm expensive defense systems, where a single Patriot interceptor costs approximately $4 million.
A significant escalation occurred on July 17, when an Iranian missile strike on a U.S. base in Jordan killed three American soldiers and injured more than 100 others. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that while most missiles were intercepted, one successfully breached defenses.
Iran has also expanded the theater of operations by involving proxy forces, including the Houthis in Yemen and various militias in Iraq. This multi-front approach, combined with the use of underground missile launchers, has complicated U.S. efforts to neutralize Iranian military capabilities.
