Iran warns of winter gas shortages and potential electricity blackouts
Iran is facing a significant energy crisis as the government warns of potential gas shortages and electricity blackouts during the upcoming winter. Officials note that the country's energy imbalance has been exacerbated by recent attacks on energy infrastructure, which reportedly caused a loss of 230 million cubic meters of gas. Efforts are underway to recover approximately 100 million cubic meters.
Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani indicated that northern provinces, specifically Mazandaran, Golestan, and North Khorasan, are at higher risk of supply issues. Local officials, including the governor of Gilan, have discussed potential gas rationing and the possibility of closing government offices, schools, or universities to manage the deficit.
In the industrial sector, gas delivery increased by one billion cubic meters in the first half of the year compared to the previous year, yet shortages persist. Mohammad Hadi Faqizadeh, head of the Electricity Industry Syndicate, stated that the electricity sector's demands from the government have exceeded 500,000 billion tomans. Experts suggest that if the shortage is not managed, the crisis could lead to planned weekly restrictions to prioritize industrial operations.
