Iran establishes special prosecutor's office for moral security

Authorities in Iran are intensifying social controls following a period of perceived leniency regarding women's attire in public spaces. Tehran Prosecutor Ali Salehi announced the establishment of a special prosecutor's office for moral security, which will operate with 12 judges.

The new office is tasked with addressing violations and crimes deemed contrary to modesty in certain cafes and restaurants in Tehran. Additionally, officials stated they will crack down on retailers selling what they term ‘unconventional clothing.’

Reports from social media indicate a resurgence of hijab reminders and enforcement in cities such as Tehran, Rasht, and Isfahan. In Rasht, citizens have reported increased monitoring by officials in public squares, advising women on appropriate street attire and sleeve lengths.
