Iran executes protester Mohammed Amini Dihagani over December unrest
Iran’s judiciary announced the execution of Mohammed Amini Dihagani on 24 July (24 Tir), confirming a death sentence for alleged participation in the December 2023 protests in Isfahan province. Authorities said Dihagani threw Molotov cocktails at the Dihaghan governor’s office and a police station and was linked to a Kalashnikov rifle, citing CCTV footage and his confessions. The Supreme Court upheld the verdict.
Human‑rights organisations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have warned that the execution follows a pattern of rapid, opaque trials and forced confessions. United Nations human‑rights commissioner Volker Türk noted that about 40 people have been executed since the start of the year, with 18 linked to the December protests. The judiciary has also executed two other citizens on alleged ISIS ties amid growing international criticism of Iran’s crackdown on dissent.
