Iran expands oil presence in Central Asia amid Russian fuel crisis

Central Asian nations are increasingly turning to Iran for oil and petroleum products as Russian fuel supplies become uncertain. This shift follows Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, which have caused shortages in Moscow and impacted regional dependencies.

Tajikistan, which has traditionally sourced up to 80 percent of its petroleum products from Russia, announced in August that it is receiving oil and petroleum products from Iran. Similarly, Kyrgyzstan, which relies on Russia for more than 90 percent of its petrol, has reached an agreement with Tehran to establish a joint refinery and receive crude oil supplies.

Experts note that Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have been particularly affected by the instability in Russian energy supplies. While Kyrgyzstan is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, Tajikistan is not.
