Iran faces domestic unrest and rising international nuclear tensions

Iran is facing escalating internal and external pressures. Domestically, the nation is grappling with a severe economic crisis characterized by soaring living costs and energy shortages. Despite possessing the world’s second-largest natural gas reserves and fourth-largest crude oil reserves, the government is struggling to provide basic necessities, leading to widespread public demonstrations and unrest.

In response to growing dissent, Iranian security officials, including police chief Ahmad-Reza Radan, have labeled protesters as “enemies” and declared a “war situation,” noting that over 6,000 people have been arrested.

Internationally, tensions have risen over a site known as ‘Axe Mountain.’ While Iran denies allegations of illicit military activities at the site, the United States has increased scrutiny. Furthermore, Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, was reportedly denied entry to Vienna for International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) meetings after the U.S. declined to grant a sanctions waiver for his visa.
