Iran economy faces record inflation and negative growth
Iran is facing a severe economic crisis characterized by record-high inflation and negative economic growth. According to the Statistical Center of Iran, point-to-point inflation reached 89.8 percent in September, marking the highest level recorded since World War II. While the Central Bank reported a slightly lower point-to-point inflation rate of 83.8 percent, both figures indicate a massive surge in the cost of living compared to the previous year.
The inflation is particularly acute in the food and beverage sector, where year-on-year inflation has reached approximately 121 percent. Specific items such as cooking oil have seen price increases of up to 257.5 percent. This surge in essential goods is placing extreme pressure on low-income households, as the cost of basic necessities outpaces wage growth.
In addition to rising prices, the economy is struggling with contraction. The Statistical Center of Iran reported that economic growth for the first three months of the year was negative 10.1 percent. Economic analysts attribute these trends to budget deficits, currency volatility, and the impact of recent exchange rate shocks. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 729.8 in September, reflecting a 4.2 percent increase in prices within a single month.
