Iran faces leadership transition following death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

The death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei following joint US and Israeli airstrikes on Tehran has triggered significant regional instability. President Masoud Pezeshkian claimed that the late leader had sought a diplomatic solution to end the long-standing feud with the United States, advocating for a resolution through logic and strength to escape a state of “neither war nor peace.”

However, the political landscape in Iran is shifting. The new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is described as being more extreme than his father. This leadership transition occurs as the US prepares to implement new sanctions and as a temporary ceasefire between the two nations has expired without a permanent peace agreement.

The fallout extends beyond Iran's borders, impacting the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa. While Tehran's influence in these regions has declined over the last decade—with the exception of its support for the Houthi movement in Yemen—the interconnected military and economic ties mean that conflicts in the Middle East can rapidly affect strategic trade corridors involving Somalia, Eritrea, Yemen, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Djibouti.
