Iran faces maritime tensions and massive VPN market growth
Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to escalate as Iran and Oman negotiate safe passage for ships, though Tehran maintains that reopening the waterway depends on ending the US naval blockade. The US has redirected 62 commercial vessels under the blockade, while Canada has imposed new sanctions due to Iranian actions in the region. The White House recently dismissed claims that the US might declare the Strait US territory.
Simultaneously, Iran’s Central Bank reported website disruptions caused by a foreign provider revoking security certificates, attributing the move to ‘hostile actions’ by the US and Israel.
Domestically, Iranian officials have acknowledged the massive scale of a parallel economy driven by internet censorship. An official in the administration of Masoud Pezeshkian stated that the annual turnover for VPN and filter-breaking services is estimated between 7 and 12 trillion tomans. Authorities admitted they do not know who is profiting from these transactions, as the funds do not reach the Ministry of Communications or official telecommunications operators.
