Iran faces severe cost-of-living crisis as food inflation surges

Iranian workers are facing severe financial hardship as the cost of basic necessities far outpaces monthly wages. According to data from the Statistical Centre of Iran, food inflation reached 128.1% year-on-year in July, making the cost of a standard food basket 2.8 times higher than the previous year.

Estimates suggest the cost of a subsistence food basket for an average working-class family of 3.3 people reached approximately 900 million rials (about $479) in July. This creates a massive deficit compared to the minimum monthly worker income, which is approximately $133. Families report cutting essential items such as protein and fruit to survive.

The economic strain is exacerbated by high unemployment and intensifying international sanctions. While grocery stores remain stocked, the combination of inflation and reduced purchasing power has left many unable to afford medicine, food, and education.
