Iran captain Mehdi Taremi slams FIFA over visa and logistics problems at 2026 World Cup

Iran’s captain Mehdi Taremi described the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a “disaster” after his team faced repeated visa denials for senior officials and was forced to travel daily from their base in Tijuana, Mexico, to venues in the United States. He said the squad lacked essential logistics and recovery staff and that promises made by FIFA president Gianni Infantino after Iran’s opening match against New Zealand were not kept. Taremi made the remarks following Iran’s 1‑1 draw with Egypt, adding that the team was treated unfairly compared with other nations.

Iranian coach Amir Ghalenoei also accused the United States of “unequal treatment” and called on FIFA to ensure fair conditions for all participants. FIFA’s Infantino acknowledged the challenges but said the organization had worked to keep Iran in the tournament. The controversy has drawn attention to the broader political tensions between Iran and the host countries and sparked concerns among Iranian fans about the team’s preparation and prospects.
