Iran football team bases in Tijuana amid US visa restrictions

The Iran national football team arrived in Tijuana, Mexico, to use the city as its base for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the United States denied visas to several team officials and staff. Only a limited number of personnel received permits that allow entry on match days, forcing the squad to travel each time a game is played in the United States.

The team began closed‑door training at Estadio Caliente under a heightened security presence by Mexican authorities. The Iranian delegation cited the visa denial as a logistical disadvantage, noting that other teams can remain near their match venues. The arrangement will remain in place until at least mid‑June, when the tournament begins.

These restrictions, stemming from diplomatic tensions between the United States and Iran, have created added travel and preparation challenges for the team ahead of its opening match against New Zealand in Los Angeles on 15 June 2026.
