Iran government authorized to increase livelihood subsidy credits
The Iranian Parliament has granted the government the authority to increase livelihood subsidy credits without requiring new legislative approval, provided sufficient financial resources are available. According to Gholamreza Tajgardoon, head of the Program and Budget Commission, the 1405 budget law includes mechanisms to allow the executive branch to adjust these support figures in response to changes in public revenue.
Specific details regarding the increase indicate that between 300,000 and 500,000 Tomans may be added to existing credits. This adjustment is expected to benefit approximately 40 to 50 million people out of the 86 million total eligible citizens. The amount will not be uniform; lower-income deciles are expected to receive higher increases, potentially up to the 500,000 Toman ceiling.
The government intends to fund these increases through savings and the removal of high-income individuals from the subsidy list, working in coordination with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance and tax authorities. While the measure aims to preserve purchasing power against inflation, officials noted that current increases may not fully address the rising cost of living and poverty lines.
