Iran grounds 41 passenger aircraft over safety concerns
Iran has grounded 41 passenger aircraft due to significant safety concerns. According to Member of Parliament Sara Fallah, security agencies warned the Iranian civil aviation authority about the high risks associated with operating these planes, specifically citing potential defects in engines manufactured by McDonnell Douglas.
Fallah, a member of the National Security Commission, criticized domestic airlines for prioritizing commercial and economic interests over passenger safety. She rejected the argument that high spare part costs justify continued operation, stating that human lives must take precedence.
The grounding occurs amid ongoing challenges caused by international sanctions, which have long hindered the maintenance and repair of Iran's aviation fleet. Recent and more comprehensive sanctions from the United States have further complicated the procurement of essential parts. Additionally, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has threatened to exclude countries from the U.S. dollar system if they provide fuel, landing services, or ticket sales to Iranian airlines.
