Iran hardliners advocate for nuclear weapons development

Hardline factions within the Iranian government are increasingly calling for the country to develop nuclear weapons, marking a significant shift in public political discourse. Proponents argue that an atomic arsenal is a necessity for national deterrence following recent military conflicts with the United States and Israel.

Political commentator Davoud Modarresian, linked to ultraconservative circles, stated that acquiring nuclear weapons is “a necessity more important than bread” for Iran. Some hardliners are also advocating for a formal withdrawal from the international Non-Proliferation Treaty, viewing it as no longer serving the interests of the Islamic Republic.

The debate has intensified following the death of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had previously issued a religious edict against nuclear weapons. His successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has not yet publicly clarified if he will uphold his father’s prohibition. Hassan Ghashghavi, spokesperson for the Parliamentary National Security Commission, suggested that a new Supreme Leader could issue a different religious ruling on the matter, noting that if the successor endorses development, Iranian leaders will follow suit.
