Iran hardliners advocate for nuclear weapons amid US conflict

Iranian lawmakers and senior security officials are increasingly making public calls for the development of nuclear weapons, a topic previously considered taboo due to religious edicts and official claims that the nuclear program is strictly for civilian use.

This shift in rhetoric follows nearly eight months of conflict with the United States and Israel. The ongoing hostilities included strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top military leaders in February. Currently, the United States is considering strikes on Pickaxe Mountain, an underground site where officials believe thousands of centrifuges have been relocated.

While major US military operations have transitioned toward economic pressure and naval blockades, diplomatic efforts have stalled. President Donald Trump recently rejected an Iranian proposal for a seven-day cease-fire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The US administration has maintained that any potential agreement must include a “meaningful” reduction in Iran’s uranium enrichment capacity.
