Iran Holds Delayed Burial for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei

Iran conducted a multi‑city funeral for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on 9 July 2026, four months after his death in a February attack. The delay was attributed to security and logistical concerns amid ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel, as well as religious dispensations that allow cold storage of a body for an extended period. Authorities said the timing also aligned with the holy month of Muharram to frame the leader’s death as a martyrdom.

The ceremonies attracted a large number of foreign bloggers, influencers and activists, including several U.S. citizens. Notably, American influencer Jackson Hinkle appeared on a Tehran stage chanting anti‑U.S. slogans and displaying a red flag, actions that sparked outrage in Washington and highlighted the event’s international media dimension.
