Iran holds massive Tehran rally to mobilize civilian volunteers
Hundreds of thousands of Iranians gathered in Tehran for the ‘Janfada-ye Iran’ (Self-Sacrifice for Iran) rally, a massive government-organized demonstration of defiance following months of conflict involving the United States and Israel. The event, which saw participants marching in combat uniforms, aimed to project national unity and readiness for defense amidst a worsening economy and U.S. naval blockades and sanctions.
General Hassan Hassanzadeh, head of the Tehran Revolutionary Guard, reported that over 600,000 people have registered for the voluntary defense campaign, with expectations that more than one million will eventually undergo military training. Hossein Taeb, the new head of the Basij militia, stated that these volunteers would be prepared for ‘full-fledged defense’ and would serve as a ‘nightmare’ for Iran’s enemies.
During the demonstrations, the Iranian government also showcased military equipment, including drones and anti-aircraft systems. Concurrently, Iran reported an attack on a Togo-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. The UK Maritime Trade Operations confirmed that the fire on the affected vessel was controlled, though maritime traffic in the region has reportedly dropped by 90% compared to pre-war levels.
