Iran intensifies enforcement of compulsory hijab laws

Tensions regarding compulsory hijab laws in Iran are intensifying as conservative politicians and religious leaders call for stricter enforcement. While authorities previously focused on geopolitical conflicts and economic instability, state media have recently begun highlighting the closure of businesses, such as cafes and restaurants, that fail to adhere to clothing regulations.

In Tehran, at least seven establishments were reportedly closed for not ensuring compliance with veiling rules, with additional closures reported in South Khorasan province. The Tehran Prosecutor's Office has also announced decisive action against businesses selling clothing deemed ‘unconventional’ or inappropriate.

This resurgence of enforcement follows the ‘Woman Life Freedom’ protest movement, which was ignited by the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody several years ago. Despite a heavy crackdown on those protests, widespread defiance remains, particularly among young women who continue to appear in public without headscarves.
