Iran investment trends: Comparing gold and automobile assets

In response to rising US dollar rates in Iran, many citizens are seeking ways to preserve the value of their assets through gold or automobiles.

Gold investment is characterized by high liquidity and low maintenance costs, as the metal does not depreciate through use. In the Iranian market, gold prices are primarily driven by global gold ounce prices and the local exchange rate of the dollar. Recent trends showed the dollar exceeding 208,000 tomans and 18-karat gold surpassing 22 million tomans. Investors should remain mindful of price bubbles, commissions, and taxes.

While automobiles are primarily consumer goods, economic conditions in Iran—including import restrictions, production changes, and inflation—have turned them into investment assets. However, unlike gold, car investment involves risks such as depreciation, maintenance costs, theft, and accidents. Additionally, gold offers higher liquidity, whereas selling a vehicle requires finding a buyer and undergoing technical inspections.
