Iran leadership shifts as Mojtaba Khamenei assumes Supreme Leader role

Following the election of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran's third Supreme Leader, questions regarding the country's power structure and his lack of public visibility have emerged. Despite his constitutional authority as commander-in-chief, Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared at official meetings, public events, or even his father's funeral. President Massoud Pezeshkian has noted that communications with the new leader are ‘extremely difficult,’ suggesting limited direct access for state officials.

Recent strategic appointments indicate shifting dynamics and potential tensions within the Iranian leadership. Mohsen Rezaï has been appointed as the secretary of the Supreme Council of National Security, replacing Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr. The announcement of Rezaï's appointment was made via the Supreme Leader's office rather than the presidency, signaling a tightening of religious control over state institutions. Additionally, Ali Abdollahi has been named chief of staff of the armed forces. Analysts suggest these moves may represent a shift in Iran's diplomatic and security posture.
