Iran leverages cyber warfare as asymmetric tool against U.S. infrastructure

Following the temporary suspension of military operations between the United States and Iran, analysts are warning that Tehran is shifting its focus toward asymmetric warfare, specifically targeting cyber infrastructure. While the U.S. and Israel previously engaged in operations titled ‘Epic Wrath’ and ‘Lion’s Roar,’ the conflict has transitioned into an economic and digital struggle.

Iran has previously demonstrated its ability to disrupt global markets, such as when it closed the Strait of Hormuz, causing volatility in energy markets. Experts, including former Department of Homeland Security official Frank Siluf, suggest that cyberspace is central to Iran’s strategy. Siluf noted that cyber warfare is ‘tailor-made for Iran’s asymmetric warfare strategy,’ aimed at exploiting vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure to create uncertainty.

Evidence of such tactics includes reported links between Iran and cyberattacks in July that disrupted a power plant in the United Kingdom and affected dozens of water systems in the United States. Furthermore, officials from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have emphasized the strategic importance of data centers, suggesting that targeting such facilities can cripple operational capabilities.
