Iran reaches maritime route agreement for Strait of Hormuz
Iran has reached an agreement on maritime route maps for the Strait of Hormuz, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei. The agreement includes new mechanisms for monitoring safe navigation, environmental protection, and combating maritime crime, alongside the implementation of maritime service tariffs.
Despite this progress, Tehran maintains that the Strait will not fully reopen as long as the United States continues its naval blockade. Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Aragchi stated that no active negotiations are currently underway with the U.S., noting that talks cannot resume until the U.S. addresses alleged violations of previous agreements. Iran is, however, in the final stages of negotiating a new maritime route with Oman.
In a separate regional development, Iran characterized the recently signed Makkah Joint Defense Pact between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey as a sign of a shifting regional perception. Baghaei suggested the pact demonstrates that regional nations are seeking security through local cooperation rather than relying on the United States. Meanwhile, reports indicate that U.S. President Donald Trump may prioritize the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz over pursuing a new nuclear deal with Iran.
