Iran Marks Anniversary of Operation Mersad

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a statement on 5 August to commemorate the anniversary of Operation Mersad, the 1988 military campaign that defeated Kurdish insurgents identified as the “Moqavemat” group. The statement praised the operation as a "proud and glorious" victory, highlighted the role of Iran’s leadership, and honored the fallen martyrs, especially the operation’s commander, Sardar Nur‑Ali Shooshtari.

A commemorative poster released on the same day recalls the battle’s details, noting that the fighting took place in a gorge near Kermanshah, involving roughly 3,500 insurgents, and stresses the operation’s significance in defending the nation’s sovereignty.
