Iran Ministry of Energy mandates electric vehicle use for managers

The Iranian Ministry of Energy has announced a plan to transition the management fleets of the water and electricity industry to electric vehicles (EVs). Minister Abbas Aliabadi, who has personally used an EV since the start of the current administration, has instructed managers to operationalize this shift to reduce fossil fuel consumption and manage fuel supply challenges.

The initiative involves conducting feasibility studies, assessing charging infrastructure requirements, and prioritizing the replacement of existing management vehicles. The ministry aims for this policy to serve as a model for other government agencies and to support the broader development of electric transportation infrastructure.

However, industry experts note that previous electrification efforts in Iran have faced significant hurdles. Challenges include a lack of cohesive long-term planning, insufficient infrastructure, and a market focus on expensive luxury imports rather than economic models or the modernization of public fleets. This has resulted in EVs being treated as luxury goods rather than practical solutions for mass transport or public service fleets.
