Iran oil sector faces financial scrutiny and leadership rumors

The Iranian oil and energy sector is facing several internal challenges, ranging from administrative rumors to financial scrutiny. The Ministry of Petroleum has officially denied rumors regarding the resignation of Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad, asserting that he remains focused on increasing production, managing energy imbalances, and neutralizing the effects of sanctions.

Simultaneously, the General Inspection Office has raised concerns regarding the financial statements of Persian Gulf Holding. The oversight body identified six significant areas of ambiguity, including an $872 million case involving Mehr Petrochemical and issues related to accumulated losses and inter-group transactions.

These financial concerns led to a lack of quorum at the Persian Gulf Holding general assembly, as major shareholders declined to attend until ambiguities in the financial reports were addressed. Additionally, the Ministry of Petroleum has defended the use of trustees, stating they are a necessary byproduct of international sanctions rather than a sign of weak oversight.
