Iran omits star striker Sardar Azmoun from World Cup squad

Iran announced its squad for the upcoming World Cup and left out leading striker Sardar Azmoun. Coach Amir Ghalenoei said Azmoun was dropped in March after he appeared on social media with United Arab Emirates Prime Minister Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, an act Tehran deemed disloyal amid the country's conflict with the United States and Israel.

The remaining roster is dominated by domestic players, many over 30, and preparation has been hampered by the suspension of the Persian Gulf Pro League due to hostilities. Ghalenoei expects the team to deliver "acceptable performances" at the tournament and noted that the World Cup will likely be the last major event for several senior members before a generational transition.
