Iran Parliament advances plan to withdraw from Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

Members of the Iranian Parliament have introduced an urgent legislative initiative to withdraw the country from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). The proposal, articulated in three points, has been submitted to parliamentary authorities and requires authorization from Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf before it can be debated.

Proponents of the move, including legislator Ali Hayideligani, argue that remaining in the treaty “only brings losses” and is no longer beneficial given recent military actions by the United States and Israel against Iranian facilities. Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, stated that while the option is “on the table,” a final decision would require coordination among the highest pillars of the Iranian regime.

The initiative comes amid heightened international scrutiny. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors recently referred Iran’s nuclear file to the United Nations Security Council. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has previously warned that verification capabilities in Iran have deteriorated, noting difficulties in monitoring nuclear facilities and determining the status of stored materials.
