Iran parliament passes bill criminalizing contact with foreign media
The Iranian Parliament has passed a resolution that could criminalize contact between citizens and foreign media, institutions, or organizations. The legislation aims to combat what the government describes as “foreign influence.” If the bill is ratified by the Guardian Council, Iranians could face prison sentences of up to two years for communicating with entities deemed hostile to the regime, such as US news organizations or foreign embassies.
Crucially, the proposed law could apply even if the communication occurs while the individual is outside of Iran. The only exception mentioned is if the contact has been pre-cleared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Legal experts and human rights observers warn that the law will create a climate of fear and further restrict the free flow of information. Reporters Without Borders has previously ranked Iran’s media environment as one of the most repressive in the world. Critics suggest the move signals an increasing trend toward isolation and stricter authoritarian control within the country.
