Iran political tensions rise amid U.S. isolation campaign
Former Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif addressed recent political tensions and personal sanctions during a book launch event. Zarif noted that the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned him because he is viewed as the ‘voice of Iran abroad.’ He reported facing simultaneous protests from monarchists in the United States, who criticized Amazon for selling his books, and from groups in Tehran demanding his prosecution.
Separately, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the Iranian government is facing collapse due to a new ‘absolute isolation’ campaign. Bessent claimed that U.S. maritime blockades have effectively cut off Iran's oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in zero oil revenue for Iran while benefiting the U.S. He asserted that the administration's strategy—which includes maritime blockades, international flight restrictions, and the seizure of digital assets—is successfully severing the Iranian leadership's economic and financial ties to the world.
