Iran postpones regional maritime talks after merchant vessel attack

An Iranian merchant vessel was attacked early Sunday morning near Qeshm Island, close to the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media reported the incident, which resulted in one death and four injuries. The governor of Qeshm attributed the attack to a “terrorist enemy.”

Following the attack, Tehran has postponed plans to brief neighboring countries regarding its efforts to manage maritime traffic in the strait. This incident occurs amid heightened tensions in the region, including recent threats to shipping in the Red Sea and Houthi movements in the Bab el Mandeb Strait.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed defiance on social media, stating that Iran would not be intimidated. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the situation, suggesting Iran is eager to reach an agreement, though he declined to comment specifically when asked if the United States was responsible for the attack on the merchant ship.
