Iran Power Ministry Clarifies Reasons Behind Spike in Some Electricity Bills

The head of the Energy Management Office at Iran's power company Tavanir, Abdolamir Yaquti, explained that the dramatic rise in some residential electricity bills is not due to a recent price change. Iran’s electricity tariff is calculated in four consumption tiers; rates increase from 0.15 × the supply price up to five times that amount as usage moves above the prescribed benchmark.

About 75 % of households fall below the benchmark and receive a heavily subsidised rate. When consumption exceeds the benchmark—200 kWh per month in spring and 300 kWh in the hotter months—customers are shifted to higher tiers, where the marginal price can be 1.5, 2.5 or five times the base rate. Even modest increases in usage can push a household into a higher tier, effectively doubling the bill. The Ministry of Energy confirmed that tariffs are adjusted only once a year, typically in early May, and no recent price hike has occurred.
