Iran receives Chinese MANPADS as Saudi Arabia shifts strategy in regional conflict

Saudi Arabia has altered its strategic posture in the war involving Iran, moving from a cautious stance to a more active alignment with the United States and Israel. The change is driven by concerns over Red Sea security after Yemeni forces entered the fighting, threatening Saudi oil export routes.

At the same time, China is set to deliver 400 portable air‑defence missile systems (MANPADS) to Tehran, a contract worth about $70 million. The shipment is intended to bolster Iran’s short‑range air defence as it prepares for possible attacks by the United States or Israel. The development raises fears of a broader escalation that could link the Middle‑East conflict with the war in Ukraine, given Russia’s reported support for Tehran.

Maria Luisa Fantappiè, programme director at the Istituto Affari Internazionali, noted that “the Saudi repositioning was triggered by the vulnerability of the Red Sea, not by any persuasion from former President Trump.”
