Iran rejects new U.S. sanctions as failed policy

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has dismissed upcoming United States sanctions as repetitive and destined to fail. Speaking via a video released on Telegram, Araqchi characterized the move as a sign of desperation, noting that previous military operations and economic pressure campaigns have not achieved their objectives.

The remarks follow an announcement from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent regarding the implementation of what he described as ‘the most severe sanctions in history’ against Iran. The U.S. strategy aims to intensify economic pressure and deter international trade with Tehran, particularly within the petroleum sector.

Iran’s economy remains under significant strain following military strikes by U.S. and Israeli forces that began in February 2026. While these conflicts caused substantial damage to infrastructure and casualties, they have not dismantled Iran’s nuclear program or led to a change in leadership. Additionally, the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted Gulf oil exports and impacted global energy markets. Araqchi stated that while Iran is open to negotiations based on mutual respect, it rejects any discussions conducted under military or economic threats.
