Iran rejects Trump's claim to declare Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory
Tensions have escalated between the United States and Iran regarding the strategic Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Donald Trump stated his intention to declare the waterway United States territory following a defeat of Iran. He characterized the current U.S. blockade on Iran as a "solid wall of steel" and asserted that no vessel would pass without permission.
In response, Iranian officials have rejected these claims. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that the strait cannot be conquered through tweets, aircraft carriers, or election speeches, asserting that the waterway remains and will continue to be Iranian. He warned that Iran would continue to impose blockades if the reality of its position is not accepted.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi noted that discussions with Oman regarding the management of the strait and new navigation routes are ongoing and could conclude soon. He emphasized that these talks with Oman are entirely separate from any negotiations with Washington, noting that no decision has been made to resume direct talks with the United States.
