Iran rejects U.S. claims of control over the Strait of Hormuz
Iran has rejected claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that the United States maintains “total control” over the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian military officials, including representatives from the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters and the Basij Organisation, asserted that the strategic waterway remains under the management and control of the Islamic Republic.
Iranian authorities stated that no commercial or oil tankers can transit the strait safely without explicit permission and supervision from Iran’s armed forces. Officials further declared that ships belonging to the United States or Israel would be denied passage. This dispute follows the onset of the conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran on February 28, which has significantly impacted maritime traffic. Data from Kpler indicates a sharp decline in transit, with only five ships passing through the strait recently, compared to approximately 140 ships daily prior to the conflict.
In a separate intelligence matter, reports indicate the CIA expressed “low confidence” in Israeli-derived intelligence regarding a purported assassination threat against President Trump during a NATO summit. Additionally, U.S. officials estimate that the Pentagon has lost at least 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones, valued at over $1.3 billion, during the ongoing war with Iran.
