Iran rejects U.S. pressure and seeks regional security pacts
Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, has rejected United States pressure to make concessions outside of existing agreements. Addressing the administration of Donald Trump, Qalibaf stated that increased economic and military pressure, including sanctions and naval blockades, will not alter Tehran’s negotiating limits.
Qalibaf specifically criticized U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth regarding threats of unprecedented economic measures. He characterized the U.S. approach as an attempt to achieve results through intimidation that exceeds the capabilities of his counterparts.
In a related development, Qalibaf reported that neighboring Middle Eastern countries have reached out to Iran to propose new security and economic cooperation arrangements. He suggested these contacts are a response to U.S. policies that he claims have placed the security of regional allies at risk.
Additionally, Iran has granted special permission for Iraqi oil tankers to transit the Strait of Hormuz. This follows discussions between Iranian and Iraqi officials, including Iraqi President Nizar Amedi, aimed at facilitating Iraqi oil exports through the strategic waterway.
