Iran reportedly invited to join Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan defense pact

Iran has reportedly received an invitation to join the Mecca Pact, a new trilateral defense agreement signed on August 7 by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. Mehdi Rahimi, director of the Iranian news agency Khaneh Mellat, stated that Tehran is currently considering the proposal.

The agreement establishes a collective defense mechanism, similar to NATO’s Article 5, where an armed attack on one signatory is treated as an attack on all. The founding members include Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

While the invitation has not been officially confirmed by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the three signatory nations, Iranian officials have expressed cautious approval. Egypt has also been identified as a potential future participant in the alliance. The pact aims to enhance military and diplomatic coordination, including joint exercises and defense industry cooperation.
